How important is it to have a powder/snow skirt in a snowboarding jacket?

I am in between 2 sizes of a helly hansen snowboarding jacket. M fits perfectly but the powder skirt is a little bit tight...but bearable. L look very big but the powder skirt fits fine.



How important is it use the powder skirt? Can get away with buying the size M?

It really doesnt matter you dont need to wear it.
